Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid that has the ability to reduce the amount of fat (a process known as lipolysis) under the skin in stubborn areas. Typically it produces safe and effective fat reduction results in the stubborn double chin, tummy, arms, thighs and love handles amongst other areas.
The substance disrupts the cell membranes of the fat cells, causing an inflammatory reaction and the fat cells subsequently dies and the fat is processed as it would be in a diet. The end result being a reduction in the fat in the treated area thus allowing the body to be sculpted without the need for surgery.

Deoxycholic acid fat dissolving injections are not a treatment for weight loss and is not suitable for large areas of fat.
The treatment is performed as a lunchtime procedure with the application of topical anesthesia (numbing cream) to the area of treatment.
Directly after the treatment there will be swelling and tingling. In cosmetically sensitive areas such as under the chin this may make you feel self-conscious for a five days and so treatment planning is essential.
What is the aim of deoxycholic acid injections?
To naturally and modestly reshape your body by removing unwanted and resistant pockets of fat.
How long will the results last?
Interestingly, we all have a set number of fat depositing cells throughout our life. These calls are called adipocytes.
This means the results from lipolysis will last forever if your weight remains stable.
If you do gain weight following lipolysis, the area in which you have had the treatment will be protected to a degree from fat deposits as a proportion of the adipocytes will have been removed.
However, with weight gain, areas of non-treatment may deposit more of this fat. The fat has to be deposited somewhere in our bodies if our calorie intake exceeds calories burned.
Weight gain and weight loss will therefore effect the results of lipolysis so it is important to have a stable plateaued weight prior to and following treatment.
You will have pretreatment photographs and weights taken and at three months these will be repeated.
What happens on the day of treatment?
Prior to the day of treatment you would have had a full consultation with Dr Rory who will assess your particular case and advise if you are a good candidate.
Treatment is normally planned in advance as swelling can be unsightly.
It is important to appreciate that deoxycholic injections are not appropriate for all patient and other treatments for fat removal may be more appropriate such as coolsculpting or liposuction.
If you are suitable, the areas to be treated are measured, marked and the treatment plan is outlined. Detailed photographs from multiple angles are taken and you are weighed.
For the treatment, this is performed in the luxurious state of the art treatment rooms.
Local anaesthesia (numbing cream) is applied and after a period of time, the injection is performed. Dr Rory has a number of techniques to make your injection experience as comfortbale as possible.
Once finished, ice packs are applied and a compressive garment. Once you are feeling comfortable, the team will then allow you to be discharged.
How long will treatment take?
This depends on the number of areas being treated, each areas treatment takes approximately five minutes.
This does not include anaesthesia time. In total, the whole procedure may last longer if numbing cream is used.
Will the procedure be painful?
No, one of the primary aims of any procedure performed by Dr Rory is to create a pain free experience. The main sensation you will feel is that of slight burning and tingling in the injection site.
An ice pack is applied afterwards to ease the discomfort.
What is the recovery period?
There is recovery period of five days after deoxycholic acid injections due to the swelling especially the case if the under chin is treated.
There will be some tenderness and swelling in the treated area and perhaps some discomfort on movement but this does not effect normal activities.
What should I consider when recovering from the procedure?
There will be some tenderness and swelling in the treated area which lasts for approximately a week. Sometimes small bruises may appear.
Results will be apparent at six weeks but final results are at three months. Repeated sessions may be necessary.
What is the cost of the treatment ?
The cost of the procedure depends on the numbers of areas treated but starts at 2,000 AED (excluding VAT) for one area (size of the under chin area).
The final cost is determined on a case by case basis dependent on complexity and additional procedures. Combination treatments will lower the price of individual treatments if done together.
A full no-commitment consultation with Dr Rory will provide all the necessary details for your particular case.
What are the risks ?
These include some discomfort, degrees of asymmetry, prolonged swelling and contour unevenness.
What is the follow up after the procedure?
Typically it involves seeing the team a six weeks after treatment for a check, then at three months.
