Condition

Cellulite

Cellulite is the presence of characteristic dimpling of the skin causing an uneven appearance, typically effecting the thighs or buttocks. It is thought to effect up to 85% of woman.

It is more common in women and is caused by the vertical arrangement of small ligaments in groups under the skin that contract like guide ropes of a tent to pull some areas of the skin down.

In men, these ligaments are not vertical, but more of a criss-cross configuration, so there is not the same effect and therefore cellulite is less common in men.

Other factors that may exacerbate cellulite in woman are genetic predisposition, weight gain and also the hormone changes approaching menopause.

The severity of the cellulite is grade:

  1. MILD; Skin has an orange peel like texture with 1-4 shallow mild depressions in the skin
  2. MODERATE; Skin has a cottage cheese like texture with more depressions that are deeper, typically between 5-9.
  3. SEVERE; Skin has a quilted mattress appearance with more than 10 deep depressions

The only United States Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) approved treatment for cellulite is Celfina. This is the treatment of choice for mild to moderate Cellulite.

In cases of severe cellulite, Celfina can be combined with Cellulite surgery with Bodyjet liposuction.
