Condition

Double Chin

The appearance of excess fat under the chin is normally referred to as a double chin or submental fat. This can be the result of increasing age, weight gain, a genetic predisposition or a chin deficiency. This should be distinguished from excess or saggy skin under the chin or in the neck area. This can appear in combination with excess skin.

If the cause of the excess fat is weight gain, obviously weight control is crucial. In addition, any chin deficiency or skin laxity should be addressed first before any double chin treatment.

The excess fat under the chin can be treated non- surgically with fat dissolving injections called Deoxycholic acid or with cryolipolysis (Fat freezing) called Coolsculpting. Surgical removal is perfomed by liposuction with the Bodyjet system. In some instances advances the chin with a chin implant or dermal filler such as Juvederm Volux may also be needed. The choice of treatment will be determined during your consultation with Dr Rory.
